Terms of Service

Last updated 10 October 2026

The short version

The Gift Guide lets you make gift lists, and lets other people give you things from them. Be honest, don’t use it for anything illegal, and remember:

The full terms are below, and they’re what counts.

1. This agreement

These terms are an agreement between you and The Gift Guide (“we”, “us”). They apply whenever you use The Gift Guide, whether or not you have an account. By using it, you agree to them and to our Privacy Policy, Payments & Refunds Policy and Cookie Policy, which are part of these terms. If you don’t agree, please don’t use The Gift Guide.

2. Who can use The Gift Guide

You must be at least 13, or the minimum age in your country if it’s higher. If you’re under 18, a parent or guardian must agree to these terms for you. To receive cash gifts you must be 18 or older and pass Stripe’s verification. You can’t use Want List if the law bars you from it, or if we have previously closed your account for breaking these terms.

3. Your account

You sign in with a link we email you, so anyone who can read your inbox can sign in as you. Keep your email account secure, and tell us straight away if you think someone else has accessed your account. You’re responsible for what happens on your account. Give us accurate information, and keep your email address current so you can still sign in.

4. Your lists and content

Everything you add (lists, notes, photos, screenshots, your profile) remains yours. You give us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to host, store, copy, display and adapt it only so we can run The Gift Guide. That includes showing it to the people your list settings allow and making the previews that appear when you share a link. The licence ends when you delete the content, except for copies others have already shared, or that we must keep by law.

You’re responsible for what you post, and you promise you have the right to post it. Public lists and profiles can be seen by anyone, and can appear in people search and in search engines. Choose “link only” or “just me” if you want less exposure.

Delivery address. You can add a delivery address to a list, so that givers buying you something can send it straight to you. You choose whether to add one, and you’re responsible for it being right. It’s shown only to givers with an active claim on that list. On a public list that can be anyone who finds it, so consider making the list “link only” first. You can change or remove it at any time.

When you add a gift by link or search, we copy details such as its name, price and photo from the shop or search provider. That information can be wrong or out of date. Always check it with the shop.

5. What you mustn’t do

6. Giving from a list

Claiming a gift tells other givers you’ll get it, so nobody doubles up. It isn’t a purchase and doesn’t oblige anyone to buy anything. An unbought claim is held for 14 days, after which it may be released for someone else.

Buying from a shop. When you buy a gift from a shop, the sale is between you and the shop. We don’t sell, ship, stock, price or guarantee anything sold there, and the shop’s terms, returns policy and privacy policy apply. Some links to shops are affiliate links that earn us a commission, at no extra cost to you (see our disclosures).

Cash gifts (chipping in on a gift, or giving to a cash fund) are card payments processed by Stripe and paid to the list’s owner. Fees, payouts and refunds are covered in our Payments & Refunds Policy.

The surprise. On a list with surprise mode on, the owner can’t see who gave what until they choose to open their gifts, usually after the occasion. Once they do, they see the name you gave and what you gave or claimed. That includes anything given afterwards, but never your email address, or notes you wrote to other givers. Opening is the owner’s choice, can happen at any time, and can’t be undone.

7. Receiving cash gifts

To receive cash gifts you set up a payout account with Stripe through The Gift Guide, and agree to the Stripe Connected Account Agreement, which includes the Stripe Services Agreement. You authorise us to share information about you and your gifts with Stripe, and to receive information from Stripe about your account. Stripe, not us, holds and pays out your money.

A cash gift is money given to you to spend as you choose, including money given toward a particular item. We don’t buy that item for you. You’re responsible for any tax on what you receive. Stripe may send you, and the tax authorities, a tax form such as a 1099-K. If a gift is refunded or disputed, the amount may be taken back from your Stripe balance.

8. Plus

Plus is a paid subscription. It renews automatically at the price shown when you subscribe until you cancel, which you can do at any time from your account page. Full billing and cancellation terms are in our Payments & Refunds Policy.

9. Sponsored picks and other services

Some gift ideas and search results are paid placements, always marked “Sponsored”. They never appear among the things a person actually added to their list. The Gift Guide links to, and relies on, services we don’t control, such as shops, Stripe, and search providers. Their own terms apply, and we aren’t responsible for them.

10. Our service and our rights

The Gift Guide’s software, design and name belong to us, and these terms don’t give you any right to them beyond using the service. If you send us feedback, we may use it without owing you anything. We may change, add or remove features. If a change significantly reduces what a paid plan includes, we’ll tell you first, and you can cancel.

11. Copyright complaints

If you think something on The Gift Guide infringes your copyright, follow our Copyright & DMCA Policy. We close the accounts of people who repeatedly infringe.

12. Suspension and closing your account

You can stop using The Gift Guide at any time, and ask us to close your account by emailing hello@wantlist.app. We may suspend or close an account, remove content, or hold or refund payments if we reasonably believe someone has broken these terms or the law, or is putting other people or The Gift Guide at risk. When we can, we’ll tell you why and give you a chance to respond. Sections 4 (the licence for content already shared), 7 (tax and reversed gifts), and 13 to 16 still apply after an account closes.

13. Disclaimers

We work hard to keep The Gift Guide running and your data safe, but it’s provided “as is” and “as available”. To the extent the law allows, we make no promises beyond those in these terms. In particular, we don’t promise that the service will always be available or error-free, that product details copied from shops are accurate, or that a gift will be bought, delivered, or turn out as hoped.

14. Limits on our liability

To the extent the law allows, we aren’t liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive losses, or for lost profits, data or goodwill. Our total liability for any claim about The Gift Guide is limited to the greater of the fees you paid us in the twelve months before the claim, and US$50. Some places don’t allow these limits, so they may not all apply to you.

15. Your responsibility to us

If someone makes a claim against us because of content you posted, how you used The Gift Guide, or your breaking these terms or the law, you’ll cover our reasonable losses and costs, including legal fees, to the extent the law allows.

16. Disputes

Please write to us first at hello@wantlist.app. Most problems can be sorted out quickly that way. These terms are governed by the laws of [governing law, e.g. the State of Delaware, USA — to be filled in], apart from its rules on conflicts of law. Disputes will be heard by [courts, e.g. the state and federal courts in Wilmington, Delaware — to be filled in]. Either of us may still bring a claim in small-claims court if it qualifies.

Consumers keep their rights. If you’re a consumer in the EU, the UK, or anywhere else whose laws give you protections that a contract can’t remove, nothing in these terms takes them away. That includes the right to bring a claim in the courts where you live.

17. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. If a change is significant, we’ll email account holders at least 14 days before it takes effect. If you keep using The Gift Guide after that, you accept the new terms. If you don’t accept them, you can close your account.

18. The rest

These terms, and the policies they mention, are the whole agreement between us about Want List. If any part is found unenforceable, the rest still applies. Not enforcing a term isn’t giving it up. You can’t transfer this agreement without our consent. We may transfer it as part of a reorganisation, merger or sale.
